Jacob Bessel helped England advance to the semi-finals of the ICC U-19 World Cup with an 88 against South Africa on Wednesday.
Bethell, a left-armed Orthodox spinner, was 1-for-30 as South Africa was knocked out with 209 before unleashing fireworks with a bat.
No. 3 Dewald Brevis had the most points in South Africa with 97, and although the rest of the batting crumbled around him, only four others scored in double figures and no one scored more than 27. After two early wickets down, Brevis steadied a carry in the company of Gerhardus Maree (27, 35b, 3×4, 1×6), but the wickets kept falling after Maree went down in the 19th.

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed is England’s most successful bowler with 4-for-48.
England quickly started the chase thanks to Bethell, who was dismissed after 110 first-goal cooperation in the 11th inning. 76 of those runs were through Bethell’s fours (16) and sixes (2), and he consumed just 42 deliveries to score.
Later, William Luxton came in with a 47 not out (41b, 6×4, 2×6) and England played home in the 32nd inning.
Zimbabwe, West Indies win
Zimbabwe beat Scotland by 108 points to advance to the semi-finals. It will be against Ireland in the semi-finals.
Matthew Welch’s 78 helped Zimbabwe give Scotland a tough chase of 249 in Wednesday’s plate quarterfinals. Scotland cannot form partnerships as it drops to 140.
West Indies were too good for Papua New Guinea in the other quarter-final set on Wednesday, winning by 169 points. The team will now face the United Arab Emirates, while Papua New Guinea will take on Uganda in the playoffs.
