The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust awarded nearly $141 million in grants in the second half of 2021, reflecting its legacy of long-term strategic investments in Maricopa County resilience and its strong response to the evolving crisis unique ability.

Piper Trust awarded grants of $140,961,650 from July 2021 to December 2021. This total includes $17,811,650 in regular and COVID response/related grants, as well as $123,150,000 in “now is now” surprise grants awarded to 71 local nonprofits in September. Through the Now is the Time grant, the trust acknowledges the hard work and dedication of community nonprofit leadership and provides substantial funding to strengthen organizations and help secure their future.
The trust was established nearly 22 years ago with Virginia G. Piper’s $590 million endowment to help nurture Maricopa County’s communities and individuals. It does this by investing in people, such as the Piper Fellows program, and maintaining a strategic long-term focus by investing in organizations and initiatives that enrich the health, well-being and opportunity of the people of Maricopa County.
But in 2020, a series of crises, including the devastating health, social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a stark, painful reckoning of inequality and racial injustice, forced the trust to do something different immediately. reaction. To date, the trust has awarded $43,754,250 in COVID-19 response and COVID-19 related grants. The fall 2021 grants continue to place a special emphasis on organizations serving Black, Indigenous, and people of color. Twenty-two grants were awarded to museums, after-school arts programs, and cultural institutions that also have a special focus on youth/underserved youth. 80 grants awarded to human service organizations supporting vulnerable populations.
With continued focus on socioeconomic challenges, and as we enter the third year of the pandemic, the Trust will continue to focus on addressing the needs of the “here and now” while staying true to its tradition of strategic investments in specific areas to achieve Long-term community resilience in Maricopa County.
