The Suntory Group today announced that as a key step in achieving its goal of using 100% sustainable PET bottles globally by 2030 and eliminating all petroleum-based virgin plastics from its global PET supply, the company has successfully created a prototype PET Bottle, made of 100% vegetable material.The prototype was produced for the company’s iconic product Orangutan Brand and its best-selling bottled mineral water brand in Japan, Suntory TianshuiAfter nearly a decade of partnership with American sustainable technology company Anellotech, this announcement marks a breakthrough.

PET is produced using two raw materials, 70% terephthalic acid (PTA) and 30% monoethylene glycol (MEG).Suntory’s prototype plant-based bottle is a combination of Anellotech’s new technology, a plant-based paraxylene extracted from wood chips (which has been converted into plant-based PTA), and the pre-existing plant-based MEG made from molasses that Suntory has been using. Made in it Suntory Tianshui Brand in Japan since 2013.
Tsunehiko Yokoi, executive officer of Suntory MONOZUKURI Expert Ltd, said: “We are happy with this achievement because it brings us one step closer to delivering this sustainable PET bottle to consumers. The significance of this technology lies in PTA. Produced from non-food biomass to avoid competition with the food chain, and MEG is also derived from non-food-grade raw materials.”
