Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in advanced storage technology, today released the industry’s first storage module that supports the new Compute Express Link (CXL) interconnect standard. The CXL-based module is integrated with Samsung’s Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) technology, which will enable server systems to significantly expand memory capacity and bandwidth, thereby accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads in data centers .

The rise of artificial intelligence and big data has promoted the trend of heterogeneous computing. In heterogeneous computing, multiple processors work in parallel to process large amounts of data. CXL is based on the PCI Express (PCIe) 5.0 interface, an open interconnection supported by the industry, which can perform high-speed, low-latency between the host processor and devices (such as accelerators, memory buffers, and smart I/O devices) Communication, while expanding memory capacity and bandwidth far exceeds today’s capabilities. Unlike traditional DDR-based memory which has limited memory channels, Samsung’s CXL-enabled DDR5 module can expand the memory capacity to terabytes while significantly reducing system latency caused by memory cache.

In addition to CXL hardware innovations, Samsung has also adopted a variety of controller and software technologies, such as memory mapping, interface conversion, and error management, which will enable the CPU or GPU to recognize CXL-based memory and use it as main memory.

Samsung’s new module has been successfully verified on Intel’s next-generation server platform, which marks the beginning of the era of high-bandwidth, low-latency, CXL-based memory using the latest DDR5 standard. Samsung is also cooperating with data centers and cloud providers around the world to better meet the demand for greater memory capacity, which is essential for processing big data applications including in-memory database systems.
