Lulu Qatar’s hypermarket has become one of the first retailers in the Middle East and North Africa to obtain the Gulf Research and Development Organization (GORD) Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) sustainable operation certification.

After GORD’s sustainability experts completed the necessary audits, the LuLu hypermarket building in Al Messila, Qatar received a total score of 1.51, which corresponds to the “golden” rating under the GSAS operating certification. Dr. Mohamed Althaf, Director of Lulu Group International, received the GSAS certificate and plaque at the award ceremony held at the Al Messila branch of Lulu.
Dr. Yousef Alhorr, the founding chairman of GORD, said when issuing the plaque and certificate: “By obtaining the GSAS operating certificate and the’GOLD’ rating, Lulu International has demonstrated its conscious efforts for operational excellence. GSAS is the first green building certification system in the Middle East and North Africa. It is used to evaluate and guide projects to reduce their environmental footprint during the design, construction and operation stages. In this case, GSAS operations aim to reduce the environmental impact of existing buildings while improving the health and well-being of its occupants.
In order to obtain the “GOLD” rating, we conducted multiple on-site audits and desk reviews to evaluate the current operation and maintenance practices of Lulu’s Al Messila branch. All these audits are conducted during business hours and will not interrupt the daily business of the hypermarket. The project is evaluated according to six categories, namely energy performance, indoor environment, waste management, facility management, water performance, and environmental policy and awareness.
Based on the results of the energy audit conducted during the certification course, Lulu and GORD are now launching a dialogue on facility upgrades through the “ESCO Mode” approach managed by GORD, thereby realizing energy-saving opportunities, thereby saving costs and reducing carbon emissions.
