Himax launches phase modulation LCoS platform for AR HUD and WSS applications

[ad_1]

Tainan City, Taiwan, May 19, 2021 (Global News)-Himax Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:HIMXThe leading supplier and fabless manufacturer of display drivers and other semiconductor products) (“Himax” or “Company”) today released the latest liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) technology for two key application platforms, namely AR, phase modulation LCoS . The head-up display (“AR HUD”) is used as a holographic display for automobiles, and the wavelength division selector switch (“WSS”) is used in wavelength division multiplexing (“WDM”) optical communication networks.

AR HUD using holographic display provides intuitive multi-focal plane viewing experience

Himax demonstrated the AR HUD platform using its phase-modulated LCoS as a holographic display, which provides a more compelling visual experience than conventional HUD solutions. AR HUD can not only provide brighter, higher-contrast images, but also display multi-focal plane images at the same time, with lower power consumption, lower cost, and smaller size. For the use case with two HUD focal planes in the car, the information displayed on the dashboard is directly projected onto the windshield in the driver’s line of sight, with the focus being 50 cm. Another long-range aircraft around 10 meters fused together augmented reality information, such as navigation maps and driving instructions, as well as far-field real-world images for the driver to visually see on the windshield. AR HUD also has a proprietary computer-generated holographic engine for real-time augmented reality information fusion and image distortion adjustment to adapt to different windshield curvatures.

WSS triggers flexible high-bandwidth data operations

In the latest WSS system of the WDM network, the phase modulation LCoS can disperse and switch the incident laser light to a separate port without the need for a digital demultiplexer. The simplification of the switching architecture can achieve a better and more flexible wavelength grid, thereby effectively controlling data routing. In addition, the phase modulation LCoS panel of the Himax WSS platform can provide stable 2-pi control with no ripple noise at the 1550 nm wavelength. All these features enable the Himax WSS platform to provide an extremely stable switching mechanism for the optical communication industry and have a higher bandwidth.

“AR HUD will become the next key function in the car. Himax’s phase modulation LCoS can realize multi-focus holographic display in the car AR HUD, and will destroy today’s HUD standard. At the same time, with the popularization of 5G, we proposed the WSS System Our phase modulation LCoS is the core of the system. It is well located and can provide higher data bandwidth for the communication backbone network,” said Mr. Jordan Wu, President and CEO of Himax. “We are an innovative company. In response to the challenging requirements of the automotive and communications industries, our engineers have used our world-leading LCoS technology and promoted the development of technology to create innovative solutions for our future customers. .”

The design and production of Himax’s LCoS display has spanned more than ten years, and it has been included in some of the world’s top technology-named products for the mass market. Himax currently has an in-house LCoS production facility in Taiwan. The monthly transportation record of the facility has proven to reach 300,000 units, and it can be expanded to 2 million units per month at its current location.
