Hong Kong, June 5, 2021-(ACN Newswire)-The textile and apparel industry has a long history of pollution, and the green transformation is imminent. According to United Nations data, the total carbon emissions of the fashion industry exceed the sum of all international flights and shipping, accounting for 10% of global carbon emissions, making it the second most polluting industry after the petroleum industry. On how to reduce pollution in the fashion industry, Chinese sporting goods brand Xtep is providing its own solutions.

Planted clothes

On June 3, Xtep launched a new environmentally friendly product polylactic acid T-shirt. Polylactic acid (PLA) is mainly extracted from corn, straw and other starch-containing crops, and converted into polylactic acid fiber after spinning. Clothes made of polylactic acid fiber are buried in a specific environment and can be naturally degraded within a year. This method of replacing plastic chemical fiber with polylactic acid can reduce the harm to the environment from the source.

As early as June 5, 2020, World Environment Day, Xtep launched the world’s first PLA windbreaker, becoming the first company in the industry to overcome the problem of PLA coloring and realize the production of polylactic acid products. At that time, PLA accounted for 19% of the entire windbreaker fabric. A year later, the proportion of PLA T-shirts today has risen sharply to 60%.

Xtep stated that the PLA content of knitted sweaters planned to be launched in the second quarter of 2022 will be further increased to 67%, and 100% pure PLA windbreakers will be launched in the third quarter of the same year. Seed” clothes. In the future, Xtep will gradually achieve breakthroughs in the application of PLA products, and strive to achieve more than 1 million PLA products in a single season by 2023.

At the press conference that day, Xtep also displayed all the environmentally friendly products of the group’s “environmental protection family”. In addition to garments made of PLA materials, there are also shoes, clothing and accessories made of environmentally friendly materials such as organic cotton, serona, and DuPont paper. The design and production of environmentally friendly products are not limited to the main brands of Xtep Group. Its new brands Soconni and Palladium have also joined the exploration in the field of environmental protection. It is understood that currently, products made of environmentally friendly materials account for 30% of Xtep Group’s entire category.

It has the support of strong supporters of Xtep’s environmental technology platform. Xtep’s environmental protection technology platform promotes environmental protection from the three dimensions of “environmental protection of raw materials”, “environmental protection of production” and “environmental protection of consumption”, and has become the main driving force of the group’s green material innovation. Among them, “raw material environmental protection” and “production environmental protection” not only pay attention to the environmental protection of raw materials, but also pay more attention to the environmental protection of the production process. Because PLA is not resistant to high temperatures, the dyeing temperature and setting temperature in the production process are 0-10 degrees Celsius and 40-60 degrees Celsius respectively, which are lower than ordinary polyester. If Xtep’s fabrics are all replaced with PLA, 300 million cubic meters of natural gas can be saved each year, which is equivalent to 2.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and 620,000 tons of coal consumption.

Lu Peng, a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, believes that the social responsibility awareness of Chinese private enterprises is constantly improving, and collective environmental protection awareness is becoming the mainstream of Chinese private enterprises. The sustainable development practices of large companies like Xtep will greatly inspire the “view on justice and benefit” of Chinese and even global counterparts.
