Dr. Sian Proctor and Ron Garland were the first astronauts (along with Nicole Stott) to create NFTs inspired by their experiences around Earth. These NFTs, Dr Proctor’s ‘Seeker’, Garan’s ‘Perspective (aka Space Selfie)’ and ‘I-SOAR’ – embedded with animation, spoken word and musical elements – are on display in the centre’s PORTL Epic unit on the conference floor .
Dr. Proctor is Inspiration 4, the first universal orbital flight and the first black woman to fly a spaceship. She was recently named to Explorers Club 50: Fifty People Who Changed the World. Garan is a former NASA astronaut who has logged more than 71 million miles of Earth’s orbit and has written three books based on his experience.
“Seeing myself in PORTL, I feel like I’m shining a light on Startship Enterprise,” Garan said.
Both cited the overview effect — a change in perspective after a person sees Earth from orbit, and inspiration for sharing conservation needs — as part of the driving force behind creating their artwork and NFTs. Astronauts’ previous NFTs have been auctioned off to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The event at Art LA is the latest in an effort to use PORTL to mix interactive performances from well-known personalities and showcase NFTs.
