Benjamin Netanyahu’s record-breaking 12-year term as prime minister ended with 60 MKs voting for the new government.

The Knesset voted to end Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12-year term as prime minister and approve a government that promised to heal a country that was deeply divided by the departure of the country’s longest-serving leader.

The new cabinet will be sworn in after the Knesset vote, with 60 votes in favor and 59 votes against the new government, which will be composed of centrist opposition leader Yail Rapid and ultra-nationalist Naftali Bennett .

Before Rapide takes over, Bennett will serve as prime minister for two years.

They will lead a government composed of political parties from different political fields, including a minority group representing 21% of Israeli and Palestinian citizens for the first time.

The end of an era

Netanyahu is the most dominant Israeli politician of his generation. He failed to form a government after Israel’s election on March 23, the fourth election in two years.

The 71-year-old is loved by his hardcore supporters and disgusted by critics. His ongoing corruption trial, and his denial of allegations, will only deepen the gap.

His opponents have long condemned Netanyahu’s divisive remarks, vile political tactics, and national interests subordinate to his political existence.
