The plane carrying the former President of Côte d’Ivoire Laurent Gbagbo has landed in Abidjan, the country’s economic center.
The 76-year-old arrived from Brussels on a commercial flight on Thursday. This will be his first trip home since he was arrested nearly 10 years ago and then transferred to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Gbagbo, who has been in power since 2000, was sent to the Hague court in 2011 after he refused to accept the election defeat in the hands of the current President Alassane Ouattara. In the months-long conflict, there were about 3,000 people were killed.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reported from Abidjan Airport that a few hours before his arrival, the situation in the city was “quite tense” as many Gbagbo supporters tried to approach the location.
“The police have set up roadblocks in the entire area near the airport, and there have been some incidents of using tear gas to disperse people,” he said.
