I have two boys under the age of 2 and they seem to be very cranky after the nap time. Is there any secret to survive till bedtime? –Followers
When you have young children, the last 4-5 hours of the day can be very difficult. Some ideas that have worked for us over the years:
1. There is a routine.
Children grow up in certain aspects of consistency-this can also help you. When they wake up from a nap, make a simple plan for their work between nap time and bedtime. I find that this can help you reduce your feelings of confusion, which usually means less crying and cranky thinking, and since we have a simple plan, I feel calmer.
Tip: Don’t plan a specific time. Just plan the sequence of events to follow.
Routine example:
- When they wake up from a nap, we will provide them with snacks and read a story together (while they are eating).
- Then, we put on our shoes and walked in the tandem stroller.
- Next, we will return and watch the 30-minute show (and my mother quickly made sure the house was clean and tidy and prepared dinner).
- Then, we washed our hands and had dinner.
- After dinner, we took a bath, put on jam, and read a bedtime story.
- Finally, we will pray, sing, and go to bed together.
2. Don’t plan to do anything after nap.
Be mentally prepared, and the only thing to do between nap time and bedtime is to spend time with the little ones. In this way, you will not be frustrated by their cranky thinking. Instead, you plan that they will need all your attention!
3. Save the best for last.
If your child particularly likes certain things, please save these things after a nap. Don’t plan to do anything that requires mental or emotional effort. If your child likes to take a bath, watch a show or certain books or activities, plan to do it after the nap time.
4. There are some landscape changes.
Take a walk with the tandem trolley. Put them on the car seat and drive for a while. Go play in another part of the house. Bring out toys that they can only play after nap time.
5. Give yourself a lot of grace.
Having a child and a baby is a lot of work. Make sure you are filling the tank and save something you like/can expect after a nap. Maybe it’s listening to audiobooks while walking, or turning on your favorite music while playing with them, or having a cup of tea while sitting down with them to watch the show, and then entertaining you.

Take some time to refuel and update the tank-you can’t just give it without replenishing it!
