Geneva (Reuters)-The head of the World Trade Organization told the Minister of Trade on Thursday that she was optimistic that the multilateral fisheries negotiations would be concluded soon, but called for a “change of thinking” to bridge the final differences.
Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Ivera said to the ministers in his opening speech at the closed-door meeting: “I believe we all promise sincerely, but we must change our way of thinking to bridge the gap that continues to separate members. This virtual meeting is the first meeting of WTO trade ministers since 2017. It aims to formulate rules to curb subsidies that lead to overfishing after 20 years of negotiations.
