U.S. civil rights leader vowed to continue fighting for voting rights Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters)-The American civil rights leader appeared at the White House meeting with President Joe Biden on Thursday, vowing to usher in the “summer of activism” to counter the new polls implemented by Republican-led states in recent months limit.

Vice President Kamala Harris also said on Thursday that the Democratic Party will invest $25 million in voter registration and education.

Harris was appointed by the president to lead the government’s voting rights efforts. She announced the news at her alma mater, Howard University, a long-established black college in Washington.

The White House said in a statement that Biden and Harris met with civil rights organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National League of Cities, and the National Action Network to “discuss the struggle to protect the right to vote in the Constitution.”

“This will be a summer of activism, a summer of returning to the streets, a summer of saying to the Senate and Congress:’You may go home, but politically it will be warmer than you think,” the pastor. Al Sharpton told reporters after the meeting.

The chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Derek Johnson, said that the meeting was “encouraging”, but it is time for Congress to take urgent action to pass legislation protecting voting rights.

“Time is of the essence. We must not forget that justice is an ongoing struggle, and democracy is an ongoing struggle,” Johnson said.

Biden’s fellow Democrats have been working with civil rights organizations to fight a series of voting restrictions in states such as Georgia and Florida. Critics say these restrictions are aimed at black, Hispanic, and young voters who help elect the Democratic Party.

Republican state lawmakers stated that their new voting law is aimed at enhancing election security, on the grounds that former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that his November election failure was the result of widespread fraud. These claims were rejected by multiple courts, state electoral authorities, and Trump’s own administration.

Last month, Senate Republicans vetoed a Democrat-backed national election reform bill that would expand voting opportunities before election day, make certain campaign contributions more transparent, and reform the lottery process for congressional districts. Republicans say this violates the power of states to enact their own election laws.
