ISTANBUL (Reuters)-On Sunday, the death toll from wildfires on the southern coast of Turkey rose to eight, and firefighters fought for the fifth day to control the fire that is still raging in coastal resort towns.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said that two more people died on Sunday as a result of wildfires in the southern town of Manavgat, adding that another 10 people in the area were receiving treatment in hospitals.
Authorities say that most of the more than 100 fires that have erupted in Turkey in the past five days have been brought under control. However, Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli said that the fires in Manavgat, Marmaris and the inland town of Milas are still burning, prompting the evacuation of some residential areas and hotels.
The camera shows a group of tourists and hotel staff evacuated by boat in the popular resort town of Bodrum, as the flames spread and smoke filled the sky. Pakdemirli said the fire in the area was brought under control on Sunday morning.
In recent days, the fire has claimed the lives of 5 people in Manavgat and 1 person in Marmaris. According to the Ministry of Forestry, efforts are being made to extinguish the six fires that are still burning in Turkey on Sunday.
Since Wednesday, thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes. Local residents and support teams from Russia, Ukraine, Iran and Azerbaijan were deployed to help the firefighters. The Turkish government promised to rebuild damaged houses and compensate for losses in fire-affected areas.
Pakdemirli said that at least 13 aircraft, 45 helicopters, drones and 828 fire trucks participated in the fire fighting.
The European Union said that after Turkey launched a disaster response plan to request help from other European countries, it helped mobilize three firefighting aircraft on Sunday, one from Croatia and two from Spain. Turkey is not a member of the European Union.
