(Reuters)-Publisher Fred Ryan announced in a memo to employees on Tuesday that all Washington Post employees must provide a complete proof of COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment by mid-September. Except for medical and religious issues.
The paper’s new vaccination policy was introduced at the time of the increase in COVID-19 cases in the United States due to the highly contagious Delta variant.
As the variants spread, American companies are exploring how and when to reopen offices. Apple (NASDAQ:) announced last week that due to a surge in cases, the company postponed the reopening of its offices to October-one month later than originally planned.
Ryan said the newspaper, owned by billionaire businessman Jeff Bezos, plans to reopen its offices for all employees three days a week on September 13, when employees must show proof of vaccination.
Contractors and guests entering the Washington Post office will also be required to show proof of vaccination.
“Although most postal employees have provided proof of vaccination, I will not take the decision lightly,” Ryan said in the memo.
“However, considering the serious health problems and real safety issues of so many postal employees, I believe this plan is correct.”
