WASHINGTON (Reuters)-The White House said on Friday that the United States will send senior federal law enforcement officials to Haiti as soon as possible to provide assistance after the assassination of President Giovenel Moyes.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said: “The United States will continue to consult closely with our Haiti and international partners to support the Haitian people after the president’s assassination.”

She said that at the request of the Haitian government, senior officials from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security will be sent to Port-au-Prince to assess the situation and learn how to provide the best assistance.

Psaki said that even before the assassination, strengthening Haiti’s law enforcement capabilities was a key priority for the United States.
