MOSCOW (Reuters)-A few weeks after British warships angered Moscow through the Crimean Peninsula, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Sunday that the Russian Navy could spot any enemy and launch “unstoppable strikes” if needed.

Putin said at the Naval Day parade in St. Petersburg: “We can detect any underwater, water, and air enemy, and launch an unstoppable attack on it when needed.”

Putin’s remarks were made after an incident in the Black Sea in June, when Russia stated that it had fired warning shots and dropped bombs on the way out of Crimean waters on a British warship.

Britain rejected Russia’s description of the incident, saying it believed that any shooting was a “shooting exercise” previously announced by Russia and did not drop a bomb.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, but the United Kingdom and most countries in the world recognize that the Black Sea Peninsula is part of Ukraine, not Russia.

Putin said last month that Russia could have sunk the British warship HMS Defender without starting World War III. It was accused of entering its territorial waters illegally and that the United States had played a role in the “provocation.”
