LONDON (Reuters)-London Heathrow Airport on Monday urged the United Kingdom to open up travel to vaccinated passengers after the recovery lags behind Europe, pushing its cumulative pandemic losses to $4 billion.

Heathrow Airport was the busiest airport in Europe before the pandemic. The airport stated that fewer than 4 million passengers passed through the airport in the first half of 2021. This level will be surpassed in the 18-day passenger flow in 2019.

It stated that it now believes that 21.5 million passengers will travel through Heathrow Airport in 2021, mainly driven by pent-up holiday demand.

Heathrow Airport Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye said in a statement on Monday: “The UK…has been slow to lift restrictions and lags behind EU competitors in international trade.

The UK tourism industry continues to be plagued by the surge in domestic COVID-19 cases and the government’s caution, leading to last-minute rule changes and cancellations.

Heathrow Airport said it has increased its liquidity to 4.8 billion pounds (6.6 billion U.S. dollars) and seeks to waive its Heathrow Financial ICR contract for the 2021 fiscal year due to cash flow pressure.

In the six months ended June 30, Heathrow Airport announced a pre-tax adjusted loss of 787 million pounds (1.08 billion U.S. dollars), compared with a loss of 471 million pounds in the same period last year, which was only affected by the pandemic Half of it.
