(Reuters)-Missouri Governor Mike Parson said on Tuesday that he had pardoned Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the St. Louis couple who attracted international attention last year for brandishing guns at racial justice protesters.

An office document shows that in addition to the McCloskeys, who are personal injury lawyers, the Republican governor pardoned another 10 people on Friday.

On June 17, 64-year-old Mark McCloskey pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of fourth-degree assault. Online court records show that his wife pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment, which is also a misdemeanor.

Mark McCloskey was ordered to pay a fine of $750, and Patricia McCloskey, 62, was fined $2,000. Both were ordered to surrender the weapons used in the incident.

The video shows the white couple yelling at apparently unarmed black and white protesters on June 28, 2020, asking them to stay away from their property. Patricia McCloskey pointed a pistol at the crowd, while her husband was holding a semi-automatic weapon.

After the white police in Minneapolis killed George Floyd, a black man, in May 2020, the protests were part of a nationwide demonstration against police violence against blacks.

The McCloskeys said they were afraid of their lives.

Four months after the incident, the St. Louis grand jury charged the couple with illegal use of weapons and tampering.

In July last year, then Republican President Donald Trump stated that the accusation of the couple was an abuse of power. During the live broadcast, the McCloskeys gave a speech at home at the Republican National Convention in August. Mark McCloskey announced last month that he would run for a seat in the U.S. Senate in Missouri as a Republican.
