Israeli opposition announces agreement to overthrow Netanyahu

Israel’s opposition parties have joined forces to try to form a minority government that can overthrow the country’s longest-serving prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and block the country’s fifth election in two years.

The self-styled “government of change” must now submit its plan to President Ruben Rivlin. If he approves the proposal, the 120-seat Knesset must vote on it, a process that takes at least a week to arrange.

A minority government with 57 seats will need the support of the 4-seat Islamic party Ra’am to cross the 61-seat threshold to form a government.

If Netanyahu can persuade at least one member of the right-wing party in the planned coalition to defect, he can destroy the small majority targeted by his opponent.

If the opposition succeeds, the government will initially be led by Naftali Bennett, a former Netanyahu ally, who leads the right-wing pro-settlement party Yamina. After losing the support of a member who refused to join the new coalition, the party has only six seats in the Knesset.

He will take turns as prime minister with former TV presenter Yair Lapid, who has 17 seats and is the leader of the centrist Yesh Atid. The rest of the coalition is made up of a series of parties, extending from the far left Meretz to the new hope of the right.

“Four elections have destroyed the country-Israel’s political crisis is unprecedented in the world,” Bennett said in a prime time speech on Sunday night. “I will do my best to form a government with my friend Yair Lapid.”

But the alliance depends on the support of Mansour Abbas, who leads Ra’am. In return for its support, the party is seeking to protect the conservative Muslim lifestyle and provide more funding for police, hospitals and civic resources in the Arab-dominated cities in northern Israel.

In the past 25 months, Israel has held four deadlocked elections, resulting in a short-lived coalition. Netanyahu himself launched the world’s fastest coronavirus vaccination program in December 2020. Hope this will help him win the subsequent elections, thus ending the alliance. election. But the March poll was inconclusive.

After 11 days of clashes between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, talks between Rapid and Bennet aimed at forming a new government were abandoned earlier this month. The violence intensified a series of community conflicts between Arabs and Jews living in Israel, triggered severe unrest in the occupied West Bank, and claimed nearly 250 lives in the Gaza Strip.

If a government is successfully formed, the new coalition will end the rule of Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, who has been in charge of the Jewish state since 2009 and served a three-year term in the 1990s.

Netanyahu will find himself cancelled when he is tried in the Jerusalem District Court for bribery, fraud, and perfidious acceptance of bribes. He believes that these allegations are political persecutions motivated by political motives, aimed at overthrowing his prime minister.

As prime minister, Netanyahu criticized the court, the attorney general and police investigators, accusing them of prejudice. As the leader of the opposition party, his influence will be much smaller.

Bennett and Rapide will work to unite an ideologically discordant right-wing, centrist and left-wing faction with the support of Arab parties. In his speech, Bennett emphasized his right-wing qualifications, claiming that he was the former leader of the Committee on Jewish Settlements in the Occupied West Bank and was regarded as illegal by the international community.

“This is not a government that will return part of Israel’s land. If necessary, it will be able to wage war,” he said.

Ra’am got rid of other Arab parties in Israel that had only supported minority governments, supported any coalition that took its demands seriously, and sought to exert influence in the country’s deadlocked politics.

Netanyahu offered Bennett and another former ally, Gideon Sa’ar, a tripartite rotating prime minister on Sunday in an attempt to form his own government.

Thrall will have 15 months at the helm of the Jewish state, Netanyahu will have two years, and Bennett will have the remainder of his five-year term. However, during the campaign, Thrall promised to overthrow Netanyahu’s seat and rejected the coalition proposal to keep him in power.

Netanyahu said before the proposal was rejected: “When you put aside any personal considerations and take far-reaching and even unprecedented steps, we are at a decisive moment in Israel’s security, character and future.
