LOS ANGELES (Reuters)-Authorities and media said that when Los Angeles police tried to safely dispose of fireworks, a confiscated firework explosion occurred on Wednesday, injuring 17 people, including 6 civilians, and damaging cars and buildings.
The Los Angeles City Fire Department said in a statement that at least nine Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officials and one American Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agent were injured, and all received minor injuries.
The fire department said they were taken to the hospital along with six civilians for treatment. Three of them were seriously injured and three were moderately injured. Another person received treatment for minor injuries at the scene.
During the holiday raid before July 4, more than 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized. The Los Angeles Police Department said on Twitter that the incident occurred when officers from the police bomb disposal team were in the process of confiscating the cache in the southern Los Angeles community.
The Los Angeles Police Department said on Twitter: “As a precaution, some fireworks were stored in our bomb disposal team trailer. It is not clear what caused the explosion.”
The Los Angeles City News Service (CNS), ABC News and TV station KCAL-TV reported that the explosion was triggered when the police tried to safely detonate some explosives.
A video clip played on KCAL-TV showed that a bomb squad’s tractor truck was blown up in a fireball, causing a car parked nearby to tip over and setting off an alarm nearby.
According to local media reports, the explosion also damaged some buildings and scattered debris on the street.
The fire department said that city building and safety inspectors are evaluating damaged houses to determine “whether anyone will be displaced.”
Mayor Eric Gasetti said on Twitter that he is “closely monitoring” the situation and has instructed the Los Angeles Police Department to “conduct a full investigation.”
The explosion occurred four days before the Independence Day holiday on July 4.
