Berlin (Reuters)-Floods in western Germany have killed 6 people, many people are missing, and at least 6 houses have collapsed.
Police said on Thursday that after the Ahr River that flows into the Rhine broke through the banks and collapsed houses, 4 people died and 30 people were missing around the Ahrweiler grape growing center south of Bonn. About 50 people are trapped on the roof, and more houses are in danger of collapsing.
“There are many places where fire brigades and rescuers have been deployed. We don’t have very accurate information yet because rescue measures are still continuing,” a police spokesperson said.
Police said two firefighters died in the Sauerland area northeast of Bonn on Wednesday. The news agency DPA said that after the rescue operation, one person drowned and the other fell to the ground.
Rail and road transportation were interrupted, and shipping on the Rhine, an important trade artery, was suspended.
The German Meteorological Agency said that on Thursday and Friday, there will be more heavy rains in southwestern Germany and the upper Rhine region of Germany.
