BRUSSELS/LONDON (Reuters)-A British and three EU sources told Reuters that unless the European Union shows greater flexibility with regard to Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom will threaten to deviate from the Brexit agreement this week.
One of the sources said that the British Minister David Frost, who led the Brexit negotiations, is preparing to announce major changes to the agreement that may have a profound impact on relations with the EU.
The British government declined to comment immediately.
An EU diplomat said that Brussels expects Frost to push away from the agreement unless the EU agrees to compromise.
A third source, a senior EU official, said that the UK will warn the EU that unless Brussels can reach an agreement, it can use Article 16 of the protocol to take unilateral measures.
The senior EU official said: “This will be a request for more negotiations with the EU and at the same time a threat.”
The UK is expected to exceed its requirements to change veterinary regulations. A senior EU official and a second EU diplomat said that London will seek to remove the European Court of Justice (ECJ) from the arbitration proceedings.
