San Salvador (Reuters)-Central American assistants to the president, senior judges and former presidents were included in the US State Department list seen by Reuters on Thursday, which listed individuals suspected of involvement in corruption, obstruction of justice or undermining democracy.
The so-called Engel list was based on a law initiated by the then U.S. representative Eliot Engel and promulgated by Congress in December, which required the State Department to collect El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala within 180 days.
Seven current and former senior Salvadoran officials appeared on the list, including President Naib Bukler’s Labour Minister Rolando Castro, Cabinet Chief Carolina Resinos, and former Justice and Security Minister Rolando. Helio Rivas.
More than a dozen Honduran legislators and two Guatemalan senior judges were also nominated, including the recently appointed Constitutional Court judge Nestor Vasquez.
The US government stated that these officials were included in the list for improperly influencing the election of Supreme Court judges and undermining the democratic process to harm political opponents.
The Salvadoran government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Booker has received international criticism, including criticism from the United States, for replacing senior judges and attorney generals.
