President Joe Biden made an optimistic assessment of the country when celebrating American Independence Day, saying that the country is roaring back to life after the pandemic, even if COVID-19 has not yet been fully “conquered.”
On Sunday, Biden spoke in front of 1,000 guests on the South Lawn of the White House, comparing the declaration of independence from the British Empire in 1776 to the rapid recovery from the coronavirus today.
“245 years ago, we declared our independence from a distant king. Today, we are closer than ever to declaring our independence from the deadly virus,” he said to invited soldiers and important staff.
“We have the upper hand in fighting this virus,” he said.
But he added: “Don’t get me wrong: COVID-19 has not been eliminated. We all know that powerful variants have emerged, such as the Delta variant.”
Biden paid tribute to those who lost their lives. The current death toll in the United States exceeds 600,000, which is shocking.
Large crowds crowded the National Mall for a large fireworks display, which is another sign that the United States hopes to use the July 4 holiday as a moment to put the virus in the rearview mirror.
Despite the enthusiastic atmosphere of Sunday’s celebrations, the Biden administration said it was concerned about the large number of people who had not yet been vaccinated.
