Seattle’s Pride Program charges white people a “compensation fee” of up to $50. The event will be held this Saturday at Jimi Hendrix Park in Seattle and will be hosted by black and brown members of the LGBT community.
The organizers stated that this special pride event is to enhance their “voice, narrative and contribution”, according to New York Post. “Everyone can participate for free, but this is a transgender event centered on blacks and brown queers,” the organizer wrote on the event page. The event was called “TAKING B[L]Confirm pride. “
“White allies and accomplices are welcome to participate, but a compensation fee of 10 to 50 US dollars will be charged to allow BLACK AND BROWN Trans and Queer COMMUNITY to keep this event free,” the event description continued.
People accuse the organizers of “reverse racism” because they charge white people for admission. It also prompted the Capitol Hill Pride organization to call on the city to investigate whether organizers violated the code of ethics by allowing only white participants to pay for the event.
“We think this kind of reverse discrimination is worse [sic] Form, we feel that we are being attacked for disparaging and hostile emails,” Capitol Hill Pride directors Philip Lipson and Charette Leffer wrote in a letter recently shared on Twitter. “We will never Entrance fees will be charged for a person’s skin color and will not be attacked for sticking to these values,” it continued.
However, the city’s Human Rights Commission is supporting the organizers of the event.
