First, a robot supported by a robotic arm sends radio waves that bounce off radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to find wallets stuck between sofa cushions.

Break it down, RFID tags are high-tech bar codes that retailers and manufacturers can access. In the second step, the RFID tag will analyze the electromagnetic signal and calculate the distance to the lost item. The third and final step is for the robot to navigate to the sofa using the built-in camera. After reaching the predetermined destination, the robot will lift the mat until the wallet is released and can be picked up.

Currently, the latest version of the robot is providing what it should provide! It has a 96% success rate for finding and picking up objects in a laboratory environment. Fadel Adib, the founding director of the research team, said this includes clothes and other household items.

As we all know, research takes time. Although we need this robot now, we can’t do it yet. Fadel suggested that his research team’s goal is to provide consumers with this robot at a cost of between $500 and $1,000 within 5 to 10 years.
