The prosecutors of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will not seek the death penalty for Corey Walker, who is one of four suspects accused of killing the late epidemic cigarette.
Today, when the 20-year-old man appeared before the judge at the re-subpoena hearing, the shade room appeared in the courtroom. Walker’s previous request to withdraw the murder charge was rejected in May, when the judge determined that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with the trial, but once the prosecutors submitted the special documents needed to consolidate their decision, he is expected to plead the case on Wednesday.
“Our office will not seek death in this case,” District Attorney Hillary Williams told the judge this morning. “We will ask for a lot.”
Williams told us that if Walker is found guilty, the highest penalty he may face now is no parole for life.
Walker is one of two adults and two teenagers who are accused of breaking into Pop Smoke’s Los Angeles home in February 2020 and snatching his rapper’s jewelry before shooting him. Walker is the only suspect among the four defendants who was not a minor when Pope died.
Back to May, Officials from the Los Angeles Police Department testified on the Pop Smoke shooting at the preliminary hearing. According to reports, Walker allegedly admitted that the organization used ski masks, gloves and police scanners to try to avoid arrest. New York Daily News Report.
“He said that when these people went in, the suspect faced (Pop Smoke) and he took a shower naked,” Det. Carlos Camacho testified.
According to Camacho, in a taped conversation, Walker allegedly told an informant that these teenagers rushed into the home and asked for the Pop Smoke jewelry he was still wearing, even saying “thank you” when he seemed to comply.
But according to reports, things changed when Pope decided to fight back and rushed towards the suspect, then he was whipped with a pistol and then shot in the chest.
Walker’s defense attorney Christopher Darden (yes, from the OJ trial) filed a motion in May to dismiss Walker’s murder charges, arguing that Walker was only the driver that night. Dutton also claimed that Walker even told his accomplices not to shoot anyone.
“He was obviously not the assistant and abettor of the premeditated murder,” Dutton argued. “At most, the principal culprit in a robbery… he is a driver. He is outside.”
But Williams said that Walker discovered the house a few hours ago and knew that the teenagers planned to rob Pop Smoke with guns in order to obtain the ice cubes that flashed in his Instagram photos earlier in the day.
Williams said: “They specifically targeted this house, hoping that the victim is there,” and said Walker’s behavior showed “reckless indifference to human life.”
