A manager at the IKEA store in Atlanta apologized after creating a menu they thought was a memorial June 19 Instead, it angered black employees.

An employee who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation showed to CBS Atlanta affiliate WGCL-TV an email sent to employees on Friday, stating that the special menu provided by customers and employees is “respect for the perseverance of African Americans and acknowledge that it has not One way to make progress”. “

“When you don’t even know the history, you can’t say that serving watermelon in June is a soul food menu-they used to feed watermelons to slaves during the period of slavery,” said an employee. “It makes a lot of people feel uneasy. People actually want to quit. People won’t come back to work.”

According to employees who spoke with WGCL-TV, 33 people were off work, which triggered an internal email response from the store manager.

The email read: “If the menu is too subjective, I’m really sorry. It was created by some of our colleagues with the best intentions. They believe that they use these celebratory foods to represent their culture and tradition.”

Employees said that the decision behind creating the menu should include the voice of black people first.

“None of my colleagues sat down to create the menu-no one was black,” the employee said.

The store manager told the staff and WGCL that the menu was revised after raising the question, but another staff member said, “They just postponed the menu by one day, thinking that everyone who was unhappy stayed at home on June 18th and not on Sunday. You will notice that this is only worse.”

Customers also think the menu is insulting.

“Frankly, I am disappointed with the learning process-you shouldn’t learn after insulting all black employees,” said one client.
