The pandemic has affected almost all aspects of our lives. Due to the short supply, even renting a car is difficult. This means rent increases. Climbing all the way.
When people locked their homes in March 2020, trips for entertainment and business purposes fell off the cliff. Car rental companies have reduced their fleets by nearly two-thirds and sold hundreds of thousands of cars. You rent a car from the airport to a holiday destination or a large conference.
Fast forward to March 2021, and the COVID vaccine will begin to be promoted nationwide. People start to travel (or at least solve logistics problems) and need to rent a car.
However, it will take some time for the car rental business to start operating again. The best advice now is to book as early as possible.
However, what has not changed is the ins and outs of using a credit card to book a car. For example, during your trip, there may be a $350 (more or less) deposit in their hands. Depending on your credit limit, this may change your spending when you are away from home.
This is frustrating when the deposit amount is higher than the rent. Moreover, the use of debit cards to book cars is not always allowed.
Save my guide to resolve debit card-credit card authorization issues to resolve more car rental issues; if you withdrew money during booking, use it immediately.
How to rent a car without a credit card
Instead of using a bank debit card to pay the deposit for the rental car, I used a PayPal debit card.
With this technique, this deposit will never leave my account.
First, you must have a PayPal Business MasterCard debit card. If you haven’t, please follow the steps below:
1. Create a PayPal account
If you don’t have an account yet, go to PayPal.com free registration.
2. Upgrade to a premium account or enterprise account
Set up when you open your account or upgrade your existing account to Premier or Business.
Please read through The difference between these accounts Know which is best for you. Upgrading to any of them is free, and they all have functions that cannot be used with personal accounts.
Basically, if you use PayPal for online business or freelancing, please upgrade to a business account. For personal use with additional features, Premier should be able to cover you.
3. Apply for a PayPal Business MasterCard debit card
If you want to use a debit card on a particular trip, please plan ahead! If you are not familiar with PayPal, you need Apply for Business Mastercard At least three months in advance.
Even if you have a PayPal account for a while, please give yourself at least one month.
Note: this is the same as PayPal Prepaid Mastercard, This is also the physical card you can get from PayPal. The loading method of a prepaid card is similar to a gift card, while a business debit card works similar to a bank debit card or an ATM card.
Even outside of this kind of attack, I like to have a PayPal debit card because:
- I can withdraw cash from my PayPal account on the ATM, or use cash like other debit cards. This means that I can make real-life purchases by making money online.
- I can use my PayPal funds immediately. It used to take three to four days to transfer the funds to my bank account.
- Every time I purchase a debit card that does not require a PIN, I get a 1% cash back.
3. Set up alternate sources of funds
Choose an alternate source of funding for your corporate debit card. This is different from choosing a backup funding source for your PayPal account, so make sure to connect it specifically to the card.
Your backup source of funds will be your checking account or another debit card (or both).
When you pay with a PayPal debit card, all funds in your PayPal account will be used first. If the amount exceeds your PayPal balance, the backup will pay for the purchase.
Warning: Regardless of whether you have funds in your backup account, your backup will cover purchases that exceed your PayPal balance. Pay attention to the balances on both accounts to avoid overdraft fees.
Rent a car with a debit card
When traveling, please use a PayPal debit card to pay your rental car deposit.
That’s it:
1. Deposit $1 into your PayPal account
A few days before you travel, deposit a small amount of funds into your PayPal account. I have always insisted on only $1.
Depending on your bank, it may take a few days for the deposit to be credited to your PayPal account. Mines usually take two or three days.
If you need it faster, you can coordinate with a friend or family member and transfer money directly from another PayPal account, which happens almost immediately.
Make sure to keep your balance low. If you already have a high balance in your PayPal account, please transfer most of it to your bank account.
All available funds in the PayPal account will be used as a deposit, so the less funds available when swiping the card, the better.
2. Look for the reservation of the available balance
When the car rental company swipes your card, your available margin will be $1.
This authorization will be valid because regardless of your checking account balance, the charge will see your spare funds and treat them as sufficient funds for the charge.
But your checking account will not be charged because the transaction will not be completed.
Later, you can also receive payments or otherwise deposit money into your PayPal account and have the right to use it. That will not be shelved.
3. Return the car and unload the cargo compartment
When you return the rental car, you need to pay the rental fee. You can credit it to the recorded PayPal card (and then credit it to the alternate source of funds), or use other cards or cash to pay if permitted.
When you return the car, the retention right will be removed from your card and you will never take money out of the deposit.
Please note that if you exceed any other costs of the car rental fee, such as smoking in the car or damaging the car, your PayPal card and/or alternate source of funds will be charged.
Do not charge your PayPal for deposits larger than your checking account balance. If you charge a deposit for any reason, you will be at risk of overdraft.
