Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud has openly expressed his displeasure over poor umpiring in the ongoing first SA v BAN Test. The visitors were on the receiving side of a lot of umpiring decisions on the fourth day of the Test match. Moreover, Mahmud also said that they would’ve been chasing 180 and not 270 if the decisions had gone in their favour.
Bangladesh had to opt for reviews to overturn decisions while at times, the on-field call stayed due to the ‘umpire’s call’ rule. Moreover, the umpire Adrian Holdstock didn’t adjudge Sarel Erwee out when it looked so obvious to the naked eye and the visitors had to opt for review to overturn the decision.

Moreover, Bangladesh were also denied an lbw decision against Keegan Petersen for which they didn’t take review only to know later that the ball would’ve hit the stumps. Petersen then went on to score 36 runs and stitch a crucial partnership as well.
“There was no hiding from the [poor] umpiring in today’s play. A number of decisions went against us. We also missed out on a wicket when the boys seemed scared of taking a review. If we got those decisions, we might be chasing 180 instead of 270.
“To be really honest, I have seen such inconsistency in umpiring after a long time. But the umpires are the best judge on the field. We have to accept the decisions,” Mahmud said after the end of day’s play.
Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar also expressed his concerns and also agreed with Shakib Al Hasan’s suggestion that the ICC should go back to neutral umpires policy in Tests now that COVID is almost gone. Shakib is not with the team currently due to personal reasons but he was following the Test match and he was clearly disappointed with the umpiring.
I think it’s time for #Icc to back to neutral umpires as covid situation is ok in most cricket playing countries. #SAvBAN

“I totally agree with Shakib. Since Covid protocols are all but over, we should go back to neutral umpires. Umpires make mistakes but definitely neutral umpires ensure everyone gets the advantage. We have seen that on and off in this series. The DRS is certainly helpful but the umpire’s call isn’t really going in our favour.

“When you have a neutral umpire in the middle, even if he makes a mistake, you don’t think it is deliberate. We have seen many decisions in this series which could have gone our way, but didn’t,” Bashar said .
As far as the Test match is concerned, Bangladesh are in trouble chasing 274. They ended Day 4 at 11/3 and have their task cut out in order to save or win the Test.
