MS Dhoni showed great awareness and agility in the thick of the action to help Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ensure the downfall of Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) dangerous powerhitting Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the IPL 2022 encounter on Sunday (April 3).
Dhoni got Rajapaksa run-out after a quick gather and a diving throw onto the stumps. The ace keeper took advantage of a horrible mix-up between Rajapaksa and his batting partner Shikhar Dhawan on an attempted single.
Rajapaksa tapped a delivery through the on-side and kept running his way to a single, only to see Dhawan avoid running through and go back inside his crease. But by the time the left-hander could recover his ground at the batting end, the moment had been sighted by CSK’s legendary ex skipper, who sprinted to the ball thrown his way by the bowler and duly inflicted the run-out.
Even as Rajapaksa dived to try to make the crease, MS Dhoni was quick enough even at the age of 40 to beat him and give CSK a crucial breakthrough.

The run-out was seen at the start of the second over in PBKS’ first-innings. Facing CSK’s England recruit Chris Jordan from the around-the-wicket angle across the leftie, Rajapaksa dapped the ball across the surface and called his partner Dhawan for a single.
But Dhawan wasn’t convinced about the safety of the run, which led to a bad case of miscommunication between the two batters. The striker might still have been safe, however, if not for an eye-catching piece of athleticism from the great MS Dhoni.

Sensing a run-out opportunity, MS Dhoni quickly sprinted in the direction of the ball after Jordan’s throw. He grabbed hold of it and made a quick throw of his own towards the stumps, with Rajapaksa clearly short of his ground.
Initially, it felt like a very bad misjudgement from the Sri Lankan batter. But his partner Dhawan was perhaps equally guilty, as he took a few early steps towards the other end and then suddenly bailed out.
However, by the time Dhawan could go back and tell Rajapaksa to not take the risks, his partner had committed himself to the single and ended up paying for it with his wicket.
