22-year-old Ayush Badoni took cricket fans by surprise when he smashed 54 off 41 balls for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in match 4 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 28. He came in with the side in all sorts of trouble at 29 for 4 and featured in a brilliant fifth-wicket stand of 87 with Deepak Hooda (55). Badoni slammed four fours and three sixes during his innings. He took on Lockie Ferguson, Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan as well. Even though LSG lost the match, Badoni won a lot of admirers. So who exactly is Badoni?
The match against GT was Badoni’s debut in the IPL. He was purchased by LSG at the auction for his base price of Rs 20 lakh. He doesn’t have a lot of experience and in fact made his T20 debut for Delhi in the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in January 2021. He has so far featured in 6 T20 games and has scored 62 runs with a best of 54, which came on IPL debut. He can bowl some off-break as well.
Badoni has some experience of played cricket at the U19 level as well. He briefly grabbed headlines when he slammed a quick-fire 52 runs off just 28 deliveries during India’s match against Sri Lanka at the U19 Asia Cup in 2018 final. He whacked two fours and five sixes in his memorable knock as India reached 304/3 from their 50 overs. The Sri Lankans were bowled for 160 in response as India lifted the crown with a comprehensive 144-run win.
Despite his impressive performances, he failed to make the Indian team for the ICC U19 World Cup 2020 which was held in South Africa. Led by Priyam Garg, India made the final of the tournament. While he hasn’t been able to get too many opportunities, Badoni will be looking forward to making an impact in the IPL.
