Former India and Royal Challenger Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli hailed MS Dhoni after he decided to step down as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper on Thursday. Taking to Twitter, Kohli described Dhoni’s reign as Chennai captain as a legendary one and one that fans will never forget.
On Thursday, CSK’s official website confirmed that Dhoni had decided to quit captaincy. They informed Dhoni has handed over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings to Ravindra Jadeja after being in the position since the franchise was founded in 2008.
Jadeja, who will make his maiden appearance as captain of the side in the season opener against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday, March 26, will be only the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni has led Super Kings to four IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. Apart from this, he has also led the team to Champions League T20 title victories in 2010 and 2014.
Reacting to the decision, Kohli wrote on his official Twitter account, “Legendary captaincy tenure in yellow skip. A chapter fans will never forget. Respect always.”
Jadeja himself shared his views on taking over the captaincy from the legendary Dhoni. In a video clip on Twitter, the all-rounder said, “Feeling good at the same time, I also need to fill in big boots. Like, Mahi bhai already set a big legacy, so I need to carry forward. So hopefully, I don’t need to worry too much because he is here, so whatever I have a question to ask, I will definitely go to him. He will be my go -to person. He was and still is today. So, I am not too worried. Thank you for all your wishes and love. Cheers. Keep supporting us. Thank you.”
Former India captain Kris Srikkanth also paid tribute to the CSK legend and wrote, “#MSDhoni quits as captain never in a million years did i think it was possible! What a leader.”
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan hailed Dhoni for getting his timing right yet again. He wrote, “Timing has always been the key for MS. Well done on your leadership and mind blowing results over the years for CSK. Would like to see him finish on a high.”
40-year-old Dhoni led CSK in 213 matches (including the now-defunct Champions League T20). Under him, CSK won 130 games and lost 81. Chennai are in fact the defending champions in the IPL.
