“Mushkil se 5-7 games hi khela hu,” Suryakumar Yadav on comparisons with Michael Bevan

Suryakumar Yadav gave a hilarious response to a journalist who talked up his comparison with former Australia middle-order batter Michael Bevan.

With Suryakumar being able to steer India home comfortably in the first ODI against West Indies in Ahmedabad, he was likened to Bevan by the journalist for his capabilities to finish off the proceedings.

But the player himself wasn’t one bit convinced about the idea and comparison as he made it a point to remind everyone that he still only warming up to the international game.

Suryakumar Yadav has played 5 ODIs and 11 T20Is for India.

Suryakumar Yadav’s funny response to comparison with Michael Bevan

“Abhi toh Suryakumar hi rehne do mujhko, mushkil se 5-7 game hi khela hu abhi (I am Suryakumar Yadav only, let me be. I have played only 5-7 games for India as of now),” said the Mumbai cricketer during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday (February 8) ahead of the second one-dayer in Ahmedabad.

The comparison with Bevan has actually come out of the blue, as hardly any fan or expert has otherwise likened Suryakumar Yadav to him. But the journalist threw up the comparison following the innovative right-hand batter’s measured knock of 34 not out off 36 deliveries to push India home in the opening game of the series.

This against West Indies is only Suryakumar’s third ODI series since his debut last year against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The 31-year-old has made an impressive start to his 50-over career, recording 197 runs from his five outings at a strike- rate of 116.56 while averaging 65.66.

His emergence has made him one of the middle-order contenders and added to the selectors’ headache as they build the side towards next year’s ODI World Cup in India.

The Bevan comparison also sounds bit off because of the unique style of batting that they two operate with. While Suryakumar Yadav is an aggressive player who doesn’t shy away from risk-taking, Bevan was an accumulator, who relished the presence of other attacking players around him to guide Australia deep into their innings. In successful run-chases against traditional top 8 nations, Bevan averaged 85.44 but had a strike-rate of only 67.10.
