Britain and Ireland on Monday abandoned plans to jointly host the 2030 World Cup in favor of trying to host the 2028 European Championships.
The quest for the flagship FIFA Men’s Championship is being led by the English Football Association, which has assessed the prospects of winning in 2010 after a stinging defeat in a tainted match in 2018.
“The feasibility study includes an analysis of the economic impact, the political football landscape and the likely costs of hosting a major international tournament,” the five British associations said in a statement. “Overall, the five associations have decided to focus only on the official bid for Euro 2028 and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“Hosting the UEFA Euros offers a similar return on investment, with European Championships being delivered at a much lower cost and potentially delivering benefits faster.”

The decision is a boost for Spain and Portugal, which are seeking a joint bid for 2030, while UEFA wants a European candidate.
England last hosted the World Cup in 1966, but failed to bid for the 2006 World Cup. But it hosted the 1996 European Championships, with eight matches at Wembley last year, when competitions were played across Europe. Scotland also host four Euro 2020 matches at Hampden Park.
Despite the Wembley final being violently damaged by England fans ahead of their loss to Italy, UEFA’s choice to play CONMEBOL with European champions Italy and South American champions Argentina in London in June, thus showing a strong sense of London’s support.
