India dished out a clinical performance with both bat and bowl to thrash West Indies by six wickets in the first One-Day International at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Chasing a paltry 177, Rohit Sharma, along with Ishan Kishan, got India off to a flyer with a 84-run opening stand. The Indian captain perished soon after his 44th ODI fifty as Virat Kohli followed suit in the same over. Kishan, who looked steady for his 36-ball 28, and Rishabh Pant fell in quick succession, leaving India’s run-chase in a slight wobble. However, Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Deepak Hooda held fort to take India over the line without further hiccups and with 22 overs to spare.
Earlier in the day, Rohit won the toss and sent West Indies in to bat. The visitor was off to a disastrous start, having lost seven wickets for just 79 on the board. Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar left the batters in a tangle on a surface that gripped and turned. Jason Holder and Fabian Allen put on a brave rearguard of 78 runs for the eighth wicket to ensure the bowlers had something to bowl at.
The teams will face off in the second ODI on Wednesday at the same venue.
