BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has urged the struggling test duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane to return to the Ranji Trophy and try to score to restore their form and confidence. Both seasoned hitters have been going through bad form lately. Rahane has not scored a century since the famous Boxing Day Test against Australia in 2020, while Pujara’s last 100 per cent test was registered in Sydney in January 2019.
In an interaction with Sportstar, Ganguly said the pair have to get back to the domestic level and work their way back. The former India captain made a national comeback using the same route after being eliminated from the Indian team in 2005.
The BCCI boss said: “Yes, they are very good players. Hopefully they can come back to the Ranji Trophy and achieve a lot, I’m sure they will. I don’t think there is any problem [for them to go back to domestic cricket after playing so much international cricket]. The Ranji Trophy is a big event and we’ve all been in it. “
Ganguly asserted, “So, they’re going to be back there to perform as well. They’ve played in the past when they only played Test cricket, not a part of an ODI or limited-match team. So, that won’t matter.” “
Speaking of the Ranji Trophy, it was confirmed on Thursday that the match will be played in two stages, divided by the IPL. The league stage matches will run from February 10 to March 15, while the second stage will be played from May 30 to June 26.
Acknowledging the challenge of organizing domestic competitions under the existing COVID-19 scenario, Ganguly said: “Obviously we missed the year of the Ranji Trophy – 2020-21. This is the most important competition in India. , we’ve always wanted to “organize it. But what the world has seen over the past two years, I don’t think that’s ever happened in anyone’s lifetime.
