Three Indian players Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and batsman Shreyas Iyer, along with several support staff, tested positive on Wednesday, days before the white-ball series against West Indies. The Indian contingent arrived in Ahmedabad on Monday for the series and is undergoing a three-day quarantine period

The first ODI of the series in Ahmedabad on February 6 will be India’s historic 1,000th one-day match, making them the first team to achieve the feat. However, with the latest development, it looks like the trio of Dhawan, Gaikwad and Iyer will miss the game and the series as they will be quarantined for a week and will also need two negative RT-PCR tests.

“Three players – Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan have tested positive. However, there are multiple COVID-positive cases among non-coach administrative support staff. Probably between two and four,” a BCCI official Conditionally verified to PTI anonymously.

“The players are largely asymptomatic and hopefully get better by the end of the quarantine period. You feel bad for Shikhar because he may have to miss the series and he’s not part of the T20 squad,” lamented the official.

He noted that this is Gaikwad’s second exposure to COVID-19 as he also tested positive during IPL 2020. The official recalled: “If you recall, Ruturaj tested positive in the UAE during the 2020 IPL and went through hell. He was in quarantine for 14 days and missed the first part of the UAE season. This is the second time he has tested positive.”

Meanwhile, the BCCI Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to the one-day class following the COVID-19 outbreak. The Cricket Board released an official statement saying: “The All India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s ODI squad after seven members including three players (senior men) from the Indian squad after three rounds of testing. Positive RT-PCR test for COVID-19.”

The statement informed that members are required to report on the upcoming three-match ODI and T20I series against West Indies in Ahmedabad on 31 January 2022. The BCCI confirmed that each member was also required to take an RT-PCR test at home before starting the journey to Ahmedabad, and travel only after a negative test.
