The Super Hawks central defender has called on social media companies to take action after Sunday’s incident

West Bromwich Albion central defender Semi Ajayi revealed that he was racist on social media after losing 2-1 to Liverpool on Sunday.

The Nigeria international played in Hawthorns. The hosts gave up their lead and suffered their 20th defeat in the Premier League this season.

After Mohamed Salah cancelled Hal Robson-Kanu’s opener in the first half, goalkeeper Alisson Becker won Liverpool’s stoppage time Stage champion.

After the game, Ajayi turned to his social media page, where he received racist comments.

The Super Eagles guard wrote on Instagram: “Again, I suffered more racism after the game on Instagram. Instagram sorted it out.”

Whether social media platforms will take action to crack down on racism remains to be seen.

Earlier this month, Premier League clubs and players and the rest of English football conducted a four-day social media boycott in response to online abuse and discrimination.

On April 30, Manchester United took bold measures to punish six individuals who racially discriminated against Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-Min Son that month.

Three season ticket holders were revoked along with two official club members and one person on the season ticket waiting list.

The club said in a statement: “Manchester United abused Tottenham’s Xiang Minson on social media after the April 11 game and initiated club sanctions against six individuals who allegedly violated the club’s rules.”

“Unfortunately, suspension orders have been issued to three season ticket holders, two full members and one individual on the season ticket waiting list, but an appeal can be filed.

“This disciplinary action shows that the club is committed to fighting discrimination in many ways. This is the result of the anti-discrimination campaign “SEE RED” launched by United Airlines earlier this month.

“SEE RED calls on fans to celebrate the contributions of the club’s black and Asian players and report discriminatory behavior.”
