Another day, former India deputy Harbhajan Singh made another set of controversial remarks, revealing that he aspired to captain the country at the highest level, but was unable to do so because “I don’t know anyone at BCCI”.

Harbhajan said gaining confidence from his experience and success as a backup captain for the Mumbai Indians (MI), who led Mumbai to a T20 Champions League title in 2011 “I am competent enough to lead this side”.
“Oh yeah! It’s also an achievement no one talks about – my captain. I don’t know anyone at the BCCI. Someone can push my case because it’s required (national captain),” Harbhajan Singh said the controversial suggestion that the India captain was a job directly linked to the connections of powerful people sitting in the BCCI office.

“If you’re not someone’s (strong) favorite, you don’t get such an honor. But let’s get off the topic,” He added. “I know I have enough (leadership) because we have coached a lot of captains.”
“It doesn’t matter if I’m captain of India or not. If I don’t captain my country, I don’t regret it. As a player, I’m always happy to serve my country.”

Harbhajan Singh quit all forms of cricket last year.

In the interview, Harbhajan Singh also spoke about his relationship with former captain MS Dhoni. Despite suggesting time and again that he was unhappy with being fired from the team after 2011, Harbhajan said his problem was not with Dhoni but with the BCCI regime and the selectors at the time.
Harbhajan claimed he had asked state selection officers about the move to drop him, and their response was that it was not in their hands.
“I don’t have any complaints about MS. In fact, he’s been a good friend over the years,” Harbhajan said he played in the second half of Dhoni’s career and played alongside IPL legends during his tenure with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
“I complained to the then sarkar (government) BCCI. I called the BCCI sarkar. The selectors of that era did not do justice to their roles. They did not allow the team to come together. Bring in new people when the greats are still there and making a difference what sense?”
“I once confronted selectors on this issue and their answer was that it wasn’t in their hands, and then I asked them why selectors, and then what?”
Harbhajan Singh was knocked out of the team for the first time in 2011 after a long period of decline. The spinner was brought back for sporadic chances in 2012, 2015 and 2016, but could never really cement his place. Late last year, he withdrew from all forms of competition.
