Australian left-arm receiver Mitchell Starc, who was named Australia’s men’s cricketer of the year, admits there was a time, until recently, when he didn’t want to play cricket at all. Starc struggled on the field, and off the field, his father was battling cancer. The 31-year-old has failed to impress in the 2020-21 home series against India. Soon after, his father also died.
Recalling the tough times, foxsports.com.au quoted Starc after winning the Allen Frontier Medal. “Obviously last year was especially tough on and off the pitch. I may not have played the cricket I wanted to play, and at certain stages, I may not have wanted to play cricket at all.”
Starc finished the India series with an average of over 40 points and has a strong showing at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. In the final, he was batted 60 times in four rounds and also failed to get a wicket. However, the left-armed player turned his fortunes around, taking an average of 19 wickets.

Starc was awarded for excellence in all three formats of the game, making him the fifth bowler in 22 years to receive the Alan Bird Medal. During his downturn, some former Australian cricketers, including spin wizard Shane Warne, were outspoken critics of Starc.
To which Stark responded: “I thought, what is that? I think someone (Warne) said it was a half-volley with a leg stump. What do you want me to talk to him (Warne) about? I’m not interested at all. He (Warne) has the right to have his opinion. I’ll play cricket the way I like it and I have a family support network and I can play cricket with some of the best mates so I’m happy with my position Rice is in.
Starc took 43 international wickets during the 12-month voting period. Before him, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath were the other bowlers to receive the award. Starc was also named the Men’s ODI Player of the Year.
He signed off saying the opinions of his friends and family, including cricketer wife Alyssa Healy, were important to him. Starc commented: “I think a key point for me is not to pay too much attention to opinions outside of my circle of trust, which I did years ago if you will. I have a wife who plays games at the highest level. With some of my closest mates who play international cricket, so I have a good sounding board on that.”
