Women’s ashes test: Knight scores centenary, but Australia tops

England captain Heather Knight went 127 unbeaten but didn’t get enough support to prevent Australia from tightening control on the second day of the Ashes Test on Friday.

England avoided the ensuing game as Knight and tailgating Sophie Ecclestone teamed up for a 66-match unbeaten ninth wicket at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. In the first innings, 8 shots 235 points, 102 points behind Australia, Australia had previously announced 9 shots 337 points.

The Cavaliers’ knock impressed Australian speed bowler Ellyse Perry (2-for-35).

‘Positive day’

“It was an unbelievably brave inning and she was very ahead from the front,” Perry said.

“I don’t think she gave us a chance. Also, Sophie Ecclestone gave us a pretty tough challenge.

“It looked like we were a little tired at the end of the day but overall it was a positive day for us and hopefully after a good night’s sleep we’ll come back and get those two wickets we need.”

There are two days left for the only test of the mixed format series.

Australia leads 4-2 and will keep the Ashes if they win the Test. The team will also play three one-day international matches.

England had already lost eight wickets when No. 3 Knight covered her second Test century with a single to celebrate with her bat in the air before hugging Ecclestone. Combining sensible defense with a prolific shooting performance on both sides of the wicket, Knight picked 13 fours and one six.

But the 31-year-old didn’t get much support aside from Ecclestone (27 not out), the only batsman with more than 15.

The Australian bowlers shared the spoils, with six players claiming at least one wicket.

Teenage bowler Darcy Brown finally collected her first wicket when her opener Lauren Winfield Hill slipped in the second after making her second Test debut, She later got an excellent catch midway through.
