2021 has been a wild year in the ring, with some shockingly frustrating and iconic moments that will forever live on in the lore of the sport. Gearing up to offer more of the same this year, Marc Magsayo already delivered a big upset, beating Gary Russell Jr. and claiming the WBC Featherweight Championship on January 22.
Much of the boxing world’s attention now turns to February 5 and the Las Vegas showdown between Keith Thurman and Mario Barrios. It’s a great matchmaking match, a battle that will almost certainly set off fireworks, while preparing the winner for a big fight later in 2022.
The year is off to a good start, but with some battles that are almost certain to happen, things will continue to get better. These include a rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua for three of the four recognized heavyweight world championships. Usyk dominated Joshua last September, winning the WBA, IBF and WBO titles. A date for the rematch has not been set, but both sides are targeting April.
Other unified and undisputed champions will also compete in 2022. Undisputed welterweight champion Josh Taylor will take on Jack Cattrall on February 26. Also, at some point in the year, unified lightweight champion George Cambozos Jr. will defend his victory over Teofimo Lopez in November belt. Kambosos’ opponent and next date have yet to be determined, but Kambosos’ options seem endless.
