U-19 WC: Afghanistan, Bangladesh advance to quarterfinals

Bangladesh won in a must-win match to beat the UAE by nine wickets to reach the quarter-finals of the U-19 World Cup (DLS method).

Bangladeshi bowlers worked together to limit UAE to 148. The defending champions then overhauled the goal with 61 balls on Saturday.

Throwing in the bat, UAE slid to eight in two-thirds. Captains Dhruv Parashar and Alishan Sharafu then combined to stabilize the boat, adding 44 runs for the third wicket. Punya Mehra then topped with a 43, but couldn’t find a partner with him as the final seven wickets fell to 98. Ripon Mondol has the best numbers of all Bangladesh bowlers, going 3 for 31.

The Bengals had no trouble in the chase, dropping the first wicket with just 25 runs remaining.

Bangladesh’s next task is the quarter-final against India on January 29.

Afghanistan knocks out Zimbabwe

Captain Sulliman Safi helped Afghanistan advance from Group C to the quarter-finals with a 109-point win over Zimbabwe.

Safi scored 111 (118b, 14×4 3×6) to help Afghanistan get 6 points with 261 in the final innings. The Afghan bowlers, led by spinner Nangeyalia Khan (4-for-30), threw 152 over Zimbabwe in 36.4 overs.

Alex Farau is the Zimbabwean bowler’s choice as he is 3-for-54 from 10 overs and has eight wickets in his game so far. Matthew Welch had the highest score in Zimbabwe with 53 points. He was one of three hitters to score in double figures.

Left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote was the most successful Afghan bowler, picking four wickets.

Also in Group C, Pakistan beat Papua New Guinea by nine wickets. Muhammad Shehzad took five wickets and Ahmed Khan took three as Papua New Guinea were knocked out by 50 in 22.4 overs. Pakistan tied the total by losing one wicket.

Pakistan will next take on Australia on January 28.
