WATCH: Furious Virat Kohli fires into Bavuma’s head; batsman ducks in time

It was odd to see Virat Kohli not captaining the field in an India shirt during the first ODI between South Africa and India in Pal on Wednesday. It sparked comments on social media, and Kohli’s unusually active energy was apparently shut down in the ODI realm. However, things took a turn in the 36th inning of the South African innings when we saw the proverbial stickman Kohli.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s broken leg was hit by Temba Bavuma on a short screen to hit Kohli, and the speed with which the ball arrived meant Kohli injured his finger on the stop. The former India captain was seen shaking hands painfully after stopping the ball.

The next ball that followed, another violent leg break, was far from Bavuma and was also hit to Kohli at the short screen. This time, Kohli received the ball, apparently also irritated by the pain of the previous ball, and returned the ball directly to Bavuma, nearly knocking the batsman’s head off. Bavuma ducked in time and Rishabh Pant couldn’t even catch the pitch. Bavuma was seen staring at Corley with his hands in the air, almost asking what Corley was thinking.

Kohli has nothing but can be seen gesturing to the batsman with “What’s this, now?” Expressions were written on his face.

India started the ODI with good results, South Africa lost three quick wickets but Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen put them in course correction mode with a fantastic partnership of the century to help South Africa out of the routine and get them into the riders seat.
