Reports: RCB sees Shreyas Iyer as captain; players reject Ahmedabad, Lucknow

Indian middle batsman Shreyas Iyer seen by strong populace as captain’s successor after parting ways with Delhi Capitals (DC) Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).

according to a Report By The Times of India, Iyer is affiliated with the RCB “radar” Replacing Virat Kohli at the helm after the great batsman decided to relinquish his captaincy at the end of IPL 2021.

“RCB are very interested in having Iyer as their next captain after Virat Kohli’s resignation as captain. They are expected to bid aggressively for the Mumbai card at the auction in Bengaluru next month,” TOI quoted people familiar with the matter as saying.

Shreyas Iyer could be RCB captain for IPL 2022

There is widespread speculation that Shreyas Iyer could be wooed by one of the two new IPL franchises in Ahmedabad and Lucknow. But discussions with players in this regard don’t seem to yield the desired results for the two think tanks.

Iyer is believed to be very determined to captain any team he plays with as he sets his sights on the team’s top job after being removed from leadership duties in the second half of IPL 2021 by DC.

Iyer, DC’s original captain, was unable to play in the first half of IPL 2021 due to a shoulder injury during the ODI series against England in March. In his place, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was temporarily appointed at the helm.

But even as Ayle returns from injury, Washington’s management and ownership groups haven’t brought him back to captaincy. The decision is credited with causing the 27-year-old to leave the team entirely during the retention and release phase.

DC’s loss could prove to be a gain for RCB as they are looking for a captain candidate for IPL 2022 and none of their current squad can take over at this stage. But RCB isn’t the only franchise eyeing Iyer’s franchise at its big auction in February. Two other franchises could also go after him, sources in the TOI report said.

“The Knights of Calcutta and King of Punjab are also expected to follow him at the auction,” According to sources, Shreyas Iyer led DC to the playoffs of IPL 2019 and their first tournament final in IPL 2020.
