An emotional Joe Root says he wants to continue as England Test captain despite injuries following Australia’s 4-0 Ashes series defeat in Hobart on Sunday.
A 146-game loss at the Bellerive Oval ended a disastrous series, with Root’s side competitive in just a few games across five Tests.
Root’s five-year tenure as captain has been questioned as the Tour tumbled from one fiasco to another, but the 31-year-old hitter made it clear he wanted to stay.
“I would love to have the opportunity to lead this team forward and turn things around,” he told reporters.
“We’re going through a really tough phase as a group of players at the moment.
“The performance wasn’t good enough, but I’d love to have a chance to turn things around and let’s start showing what you’d expect from an English testing team.”

Root was stubborn when asked if he just wanted a chance to step down as captain after a successful series.
“In my own eyes, I believe I am the right person to lead this team forward, and if the decision is not in my hands, so be it,” he added.
“But I’d love to have the opportunity to carry it forward.”
Root has been open and outspoken about the inadequacy of his bowlers and batsmen in the series and said the team has to accept that they are clearly the second best on this tour.
“We let ourselves down because we didn’t do justice to our abilities,” he said.
“But, at the same time, it’s clear that Australia is better than us in every way at this moment.
“It breaks my heart to say that, but it’s a reality and we have to accept that and find a way to do it better. Find a way to turn things around quickly.”
