Effective immediately, UNC Health Hospitals The public will no longer be tested for COVID-19 in the emergency room who are asymptomatic (Ed). Emergency departments at hospitals across the country are overwhelmed with patients due to the Omicron variant, and UNC Health is no exception, where COVID cases are surging.
“To ensure our EDs have the time and tools to appropriately care for all patients seeking urgent care at North Carolina hospitals, we are suspending COVID testing for asymptomatic patients,” explained Dr. Matt Ewend, chief clinical officer for UNC Health. “Our EDs will only test patients for COVID-19 when they are symptomatic or need to be admitted to the hospital for other reasons.”
UNC Health is following guidance provided this week by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). This policy applies to the following UNC Health entities And to provide guidance to other UNC Health entities:
