Another day, the Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22 found itself in controversy as a referee rant saw batsmen strike at the start of a new round despite running on the last ball of the previous round two balls.

But how does this happen in BBL?
It was purely because the two local BBL referees – Philip Gillespie and Simon Lightbody – failed to perform their duties properly. Gillespie and Lightbody didn’t notice that the two hitters didn’t change the strike from the previous pitch. The shocking error was likely due to a drink break that occurred between the end of the 10th inning and the start of the 11th inning of the Scorchers innings.
When Evans and his partner Nick Hobson ran for two, Hobson should strike the next game. Instead, Evans started on the 11th and made the most of the roar in front of the referee. Oddly, the defense also had no one on the alert for the situation and asked both batsmen to make appropriate last-minute changes.

The umpire’s error then hurt the Stars badly, as the Scorchers allowed their better-positioned, bigger-power batsman Evans to strike on the first ball of the “Power Surge”. Evans hit Lauf with maximum speed before hitting six and four again in a huge lob.
Why the oversight matters, as the Scorchers endured a power surge (power field limit) at 10.1 and let their bigger hitter Evans bat on the first ball.

Under BBL ‘Power Surge’ rules, batsmen have more than two windows to significantly boost their totals, as fielding teams only allow two players outside 30 yards. Since the Scorchers can brazenly let their better hitters hit the first pitch of the maiden ‘Power Surge’, they can maximize their shot efficiency and be better.
In a format where every run was crucial, the roar from the referee gave the Scorchers a better chance of hitting the boundary from the first ball and launching the surge phase productively and gaining momentum for their second half.
